Preparation is key!
Just as team practices are vital to team improvement, individual preparation is vital to individual improvement.
Individual preparation matters.
Prepare when no one is looking. I believe that if you are not preparing when no one is looking, you won’t be fully prepared when game time arrives.
I begin with a move from my VIDEO book “IN-GAME Individual Offensive Basketball”. It is the Moving Back Wrap.
See how the merging of video and words makes your mastery of the move faster and easier.
The following text is from page 20 of “IN-GAME Individual Offensive Basketball”. The bolded words below appear in freeze-frame on the video.
Moving Forward Back Wrap
Use when you have committed to an aggressive drive to the basket.
1. As you dribble the basketball moving forward, fake with your eyes and head in the direction of your dribble;
2. On the next bounce of the ball, plant your dribbling-side foot for balance and power;
3. Swing the ball behind-and-around you using only your fingertips and finger pads (don’t carry the ball), turn the palm of your hand forward toward the basket;
4. Aim for the ball to land on your opposite side, wide and slightly in front of you (the faster you are moving, the more forward the dribbled ball should land);
5. Step in the direction of the ball movement as you lower and turn your hips;
6. Receive the bounced ball with your other hand, fingers pointing down (you may need to glance down to receive the ball); stop the spinning of the ball immediately for control.
